It is, so to speak, the mother of all theme trails for children: the Muggestutz dwarf trail on the Hasliberg/BE is a classic – and always worth the walk.
“Dwarfs belong to the little people and are well-known in many areas”, writes Jeanne Ruland in her book “Fairies, Elves and Gnomes”. Dwarfs belong to the spirits of the Earth and the peoples of the Earth and are very closely linked to the soil of the Earth. They live in many places, including underground caves, in between tree roots, in the undergrowth around trees, in the mountains and in rocks and stones. And some of them even live in Haslital.
Muggestutz, house Bannwald
Muggestutz is the name of the oldest dwarf in Haslital and has given his name to the famous theme path. He experiences exciting adventures on the five kilometre long dwarf trail from Mägisalp over Gummenalp to Bidmi, and these can also be shared by the children following in his footsteps. The three kilometre long extension trail leads from Käserstatt across high moors and over the Balisalp along the Wildbach to Bannwald.
If you want to get onto the dwarf trail, start in Meiringen or, coming from Lucerne, Hasliberg Reuti (cable car to Mägisalp) or Hasliberg Wasserwendi (cable car to Käserstatt). As a taster before or a winding down after completing the dwarf trail, you can read the Muggestutz books by Susanna Schmid-Germann.
If you meet a dwarf, remember that they are possessed of magical powers, including the powers of camouflage and concealment and the power to make things disappear and reappear. Their caps are of great significance: anyone who steals a dwarf’s cap prevents him from returning to his own realm…
