In the Best Western Hotel Grauholz*** in Bern-Ittigen, the fire has gone out: the old oil heating has been replaced by a modern heat exchange pump to produce environmentally-friendly heat. And it also has the first 400 Volt electric filling station in canton Bern.
Despite its location on the A1 highway, the Best Western Hotel Grauholz is in the countryside. Guests can enjoy themselves in a natural setting, with walks in the woods and peace and quiet – and Mother Nature also enjoys herself. In 2008, the hotel replaced its oil-fired heating with an air-to-air heat pump. «Previously, we consumed around 36,000 litres of oil every year for heating», hotelier Daniel Leuenberger remembers. Now an environmentally-friendly heat exchange pump keeps the Best Western Hotel Grauholz comfortably warm. The water is also heated by the heat pump.
The hotel also draws environmentally-friendly electricity from the power generator, BKW: 54,000 kilowatt hours a year as Water Star and 7,000 kilowatt hours of Sun Star, produced on the roof of the Stade de Suisse stadium in Bern. Energy-saving light bulbs are used in the restaurant, Waterless urinals mean that around 3,600 litres of water is saved in the toilets every day.
The Best Western Hotel Grauholz is progressive in other ways. In May, Daniel Leuenberger and his team opened an electricity filling station – the first 400 Volt electric battery recharging station in canton Bern. Drivers can recharge their batteries at the station – and at high speed, too. The very latest technology has made a three-fold increase in the speed of recharging possible. The station operates with solar-powered electricity from Mont Soleil in the Jura.
